Description

Russia, ca. 19th century

The icon was created in the classical style of the 16th-century Moscow School of painting.

Important and decorative Russian icon depicting Saint George the Victorious (“Georgij Pobedonossez”) in battle against the dragon. The saint appears in a dynamic equestrian representation on a white horse, piercing the dragon with his lance as a symbol of faith’s triumph over evil. On the right, the rescued princess is shown before the city gates, above which is a finely executed architectural backdrop with richly articulated buildings and towers.

The icon impresses with its high-quality narrative composition, the luminous gold ground, and the finely balanced coloration in red, ochre, and dark tones. Particularly noteworthy is the vivid architectural design of the background, characteristic of sophisticated Russian workshop productions based on 16th-century models.

This is a museum-quality object.

An impressive large-format icon with strong spatial presence.
