Description

This Russian Orthodox icon depicts the assembly of the monastic saints of the Kiev Caves Monastery (Kiev Pechersk Lavra), one of the most important spiritual centers of the Orthodox world. In the center, the monastery church is depicted, surrounded by the saints in monastic and episcopal vestments. Above, God the Father is enthroned above a heavenly scene with angels and the Trinity.

Among the centrally depicted saints are Saint Anthony and Theodosius of Kiev, the founders of the Lavra, as well as Nestor the Chronicler, Mark the Cave Dweller, and other revered abbots and hermits.

The icon comes from the Susalskaya School of Painting, which was known in the 19th century for its luminous colors, clear composition, and fine miniature painting. The golden background and rich ornamentation emphasize the heavenly character of the depicted community of saints.
