The iconostasis is the spiritual center of Orthodox liturgy. It shows the connection between heaven and earth, Christ and the faithful. It symbolizes the union of the heavenly and earthly church, the saints as intercessors for the faithful, and the central role of Christ and the Mother of God in salvation history.
The order of the iconostasis conveys the hierarchy and harmony of the divine order. It serves as a spiritual gate through which the congregation participates in the mystery of the Eucharist.
The iconostasis consists of several horizontal levels (registers) that represent the order and hierarchy of the sacred figures and biblical events.
The icons of the saints and scenes serve as windows to heaven and as a medium for prayer and intercession.
